  Reading from  Sauer-Zavala, Shannon & Barlow, David, H. (2021). Neuroticism: A new framework for emotional disorders and their treatment. New York: The Guilford Press, they quoted Turkheimer: Variance and causation in behavioral development: (1) "Genes are an inextricable component of any developmental system, and thus genes are involved in all traits ” and " all traits are heritable. " (Gottlieb, G. (1992). Individual development and evolution: The genesis of novel behavior. New York: Oxford University Press at p. 147). The nature vs. nurture debate continues but we are gaining a deeper understanding of just how important and foundational genetics and natural selection are in the evolution of our capacity for complex behavior.  Dr. Husen here, 11/21/21 (Sunday Morning). I'll be reading from a new book I've been thoroughly enjoying. I read here, Chapter 1 of  Sauer-Zavala, Shannon & Barlow, David, H. (2021). Neuroticism: A new framework for emotional disorders and their treatment. New York: The Guilford Press. I take some scholarly excursions to Internet Archive to read from a source book and a journal article or two as I explore the history behind Saurer-Zavala and Barlow's wonderful definition of Neuroticism.                   I have been studying Autism lately, reading broadly about the disorder including it's history.                One of the worst times in the history of understanding this neurodevelopmental disorder was int eh 1960s when Mothers and Fathers were blamed for the condition.                The blame game it's called in Donvan and Zucker's 2016 book entitled "In a Different Voice: The Story of Autism." I read their chapter which begins their section on this issue. Please, please, please don't blame parents for their children's autism. Freud on the Dynamics of Transference I decided to read Freud's 1912 "Dynamics of Transference" after reading the following statement in Cozolino's "The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy" where he talked about the projective hypothesis. There Cozolino wrote: "Despite a conscious awareness that something may be wrong, the hidden layers of neural  processing continue to organize the world based on the prior experiences that shaped them. As we  will see in later chapters, the neural circuitry involved with fear has a tenacious memory and can  invisibly influence conscious awareness for a lifetime. Part of psychodynamic therapy is an  exploration and uncovering of this unconscious organization of experience. Categorical Distinctions and Their Impact on Emotional Reactivity in Relationships One of the first distinctions that a newborn makes is between pleasure and pain. We tend to approach conditions that bring us pleasure and avoid those that bring us pain. Philosophers and scientists Have identified this process as fundamental to adaptation. In fact children who have problems with distinguishing pleasure from pain have significantly reduced life expectancies. The second distinction in newborn begins to understand and appreciate is the distinction between self another. Persons with fragile personalities subject to decompensation when relationally distressed tend toward all of nothing thinking and feeling and lose contact, Dr. Linehan (1993) said, with the wisdom or their lives losing all ameliorating perspective. He was able to grow "537" plants.  Dr. Jim Reads Darwin's Origin of Species, Chapter 11 Chapter 11, On the Geological Succession of Organic Beings Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 "[T]he degree of perfection or highness, and natural selection will tend to render the organization of each being more specialized; though leaving many creatures with simple structures fitted for simple conditions of life, and in some cases even degrading the organization, yet leaving such degraded being better fitted for new walks of life." Freud on the Unconscious and How Trauma Affects Feelings: Dr. Jim reads from Freud, The Unconscious about the Instincts or Feelings an Emotions : Freud defined an instinct as "the concept on the frontier between the somatic and the mental..., the psychical representative of organic forces." (Instincts and their vicissitudes, p. 112). He then wrote about "emotional impulses" that are "perceived, but misconstrued. Owing to the repression of its proper representative it has been forced to become connected with another idea, and is now regarded by consciousness as the manifestation of that idea"--"the idea  has undergone repression." Three such vicissitudes are possible: 1. suppression "so that no trace of it is found; 2. affect , which involves a "qualitatively colored" mood; or, 3. "it is changed into anxiety ."  Dr. Jim Reads Augusten Burrough's A Wolf At The Table: A Memoir of My Father Chapter 1 "My mother’s voice is my home and when I am surrounded by her sounds, I sleep."  Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5, Part 1 , Part 2 "All a rainbow is light that walks behind a raindrop and its colors fall out." In this chapter Augusten tells a story of when he was 8 or 9 and his desire to have physical proximity and touch by his Father. His father was highly avoidant/dismissive. Augusten at 8 or 9 conducted an experiment to see how often his dad rejected his overtures for physical contact. It was 100%. Augusten then recounts how he gathered a shirt and pants from his dad stuff them with bedsheets towels and pillows and use that to satisfy his need for proximity to his Father.
